Pain Isn’t the Enemy—It’s a Signal

Many people think they need to be pain-free to live a happy and active life. But that’s not true! As a Strength and Conditioning Coach, I help people understand that pain is not always bad—it’s your body’s way of sending a message.

Instead of stopping completely, the key is to train smarter. With the right strength and conditioning approach, you can learn to manage pain while staying active.

The Traffic Light Guide to Pain

When you feel pain, use this simple system to know what to do:

🔴 Red Light (Pain Level 5-10) – Stop! If the pain is sharp or severe, stop the activity. See a Therapist, Physiotherapist, or Exercise Physiologist to check for injuries.

🟡 Yellow Light (Pain Level 3-4) – Be careful. If the pain is mild but noticeable, modify the exercise, take breaks, or lower the intensity. An exercise physiologist or even a Strength and Conditioning Coach can help you adjust your programme so you can keep training safely.

🟢 Green Light (Pain Level 1-3) – Keep going! Some discomfort is normal, as long as it doesn’t get worse. Stay active, but listen to your body.

Pain vs. Injury—Know the Difference

Not all pain means you’re injured. Sometimes, it’s just your body adapting to new movements. Learning to tell the difference helps you keep training without fear. A Strength and Conditioning Coach can guide you in making smart adjustments to prevent injuries while improving your performance.
