Beyond Biomechanics, Reframing Pain as Adaptation

As an Exercise Physiologist and Strength Coach, working with clients experiencing chronic pain and mental health challenges, We often encounter a misconception, that the body is a machine needing repair.

The reality is far more fascinating.
Our bodies are complex and incredibly adaptable.

From Fixing to Adapting, A Paradigm Shift

Through years of personal and professional exploration, I’ve come to understand that chronic pain isn’t simply about “Weak Glutes” or “Tight Hamstrings.”

These might be contributing factors, but they’re not the whole story.

Here’s a powerful framework to consider:

  • Stressors and Adaptation:
When we encounter a challenge (physical or emotional stressor), our body responds to cope.
This response can sometimes manifest as pain.
  • The Power of Adaptation:
    The good news?
Our bodies are designed to adapt!
By gradually reintroducing activities we love, we can help our bodies build tolerance and resilience to stressors.

Pain Doesn’t Have to Stop You

Chronic pain can be incredibly frustrating, but it doesn’t mean you have to abandon the activities that bring you joy.

A Step-by-Step Approach to Movement with Pain

Here’s a simple yet powerful approach to navigating pain and reclaiming your activities:

  1. Understand Your Challenge:
Clearly define the activity you’d like to return to (surfing, boxing, playing with your kids).
  2. Establish Your Baseline:
Assess your current level of function and comfort with this activity.
  3. Introduce Stressors (Safely):
Work with a qualified EP to design a gradual progression of exercises or movements that act as stressors, helping your body adapt and build tolerance.
  4. Re-evaluate and Adapt:
Regularly reassess your baseline and adjust the program as needed.

Always remember,
Your body is capable of incredible adaptation.
By supporting its natural resilience, you can move beyond pain and rediscover the activities that make life vibrant.
